Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulfate (DHEA-S) TestDehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) is an important hormone produced in the adrenal glands. Appropriate levels of DHEA-S are associated with increased energy, healthy immune system, heart health,good memory and elevated mood. DHEA-S is the major steroid of the fetal adrenal. DHEA-S is the principal adrenal androgen and is secreted together with cortisol under the control of ACTH and prolactin. DHEA-S is elevated with hyperprolactinemia. In females and children, DHEA and DHEA-S excess causes masculinization. The levels of this steroid, DHEA-S, increase before the onset of puberty (adrenarche) and decrease significantly with age. DHEA and DHEA-S are the major precursors of 17-ketosteroids. A significant deviation
from the normal range may require further evaluation by your physician.
