Carnitine, Total and Free
This test is used to evaluate
various muscle disorders. L-carnitine is a normal component of human serum.
Its concentrations are altered in patients with acute muscular necrosis, kidney
disease, systemic carnitine deficiency, and diabetes mellitus.
L-carnitine (t-trimethylamino-(ß)-hydroxybutyric
acid) is essential for the transport of free fatty acids into mitochondria
and hence to the site of fatty acid oxidation for energy production from fat.
Carnitine deficiency has been associated with several cases of myopathy and
may play an important role in at least some disorders of lipid metabolism.
A significant deviation
from the normal range may require further evaluation by your physician.
