Vitamin D Deficiency-Diagnosis and Treatment
Lack of vitamin D dangerous for teens
Updated: 2009-04-02 20:56:57 CST Category: Vitamin D Deficiency-Diagnosis and Treatment
In an effort to raise awareness among teenagers of vitamin D deficiencies, a CBS affiliate in New York has launched a new campaign aimed at convincing people to get more of the nutrient either by going outside or eating a certain diet.
CBS 2 HD launched Go New York and interviewed some US teenagers who were vitamin D deficient as a way of presenting the health dangers of the condition.
Yisroel Grabie, who is 16-years-old, told the news provider he had a "stinging pain" at the lower end of his back that never seemed to go away.
"And as I would walk the stinging would progress and do you know it would increase the intensity," Grabie said.
Doctors later determined Grabie was suffering from a fractured vertebra in his spine, due to osteoporosis, according to the article. Lab tests eventually revealed the teenager was "severely vitamin D deficient."
The news follows a recent report that found one in every seven US teenagers may be vitamin D deficient, with the numbers skewing higher in the African-American community.
One way to avoid developing a serious health condition is to get a vitamin D test to reveal the level of the nutrient in one's body.
