Vitamin D has recently been linked to a broad range of health benefits. It has been shown to decrease the risk of heart disease, depression and some cancers, and has been linked to healthier pregnancies and births.
Due to all the attention the nutrient has been receiving, many people are heading to their doctors seeking vitamin D tests to determine if they are deficient of the nutrient.
The Lehigh Valley Express Times recently reported that doctor's offices throughout Pennsylvania are seeing a rise in the number of patients seeking vitamin D tests.
Sandy Dean, a nurse practitioner at a local Warren Hospital, told the news source that the clinical evidence of the health benefits of the vitamin is becoming overwhelming, causing many people to become interested.
"I think we're starting to see more awareness (of vitamin D deficiency)," she said. "We're just learning the importance of vitamin D and how it can affect multiple things."
American Medical Association studies show that as much as 77 percent of the population may have low levels of vitamin D.
