Eggs may help individuals boost their vitamin D levels during the winter

Category: Vitamin D Deficiency-Diagnosis and Treatment

With winter approaching, individuals may be more likely to receive unhealthy vitamin D test results, as the weakening sun and shorter days makes it more difficult for people's bodies to produce the nutrient. It is important for individuals to find other sources of vitamin D during this time of year.

One possible source is eggs. Few foods have vitamin D levels comparable to eggs. A single egg contains about 10 percent of a person's recommended daily dose of the nutrient. Despite being high in cholesterol, experts say the food can give individuals a nutritional lift at a time of year when it is badly needed.

"Cooking with eggs is an easy, budget-friendly way to add vitamin D and other essential nutrients to your family's diet," says Helenbeth Reynolds, a registered dietitian. "Eggs can be paired with almost any vegetable, making it easy for Americans to follow the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2010."

Winter is the most common time of year for diagnoses of vitamin D deficiency. However, taking proactive steps to avoid this may help individuals maintain strong health throughout the colder months.
