A new five-year campaign was launched this week by the Obama administration with the goal of reinvigorating the American public about HIV infection and AIDS.
Act Against AIDS will reportedly include public service announcements, advertising on public transportation, text messages and a website called NineAndaHalfMinutes.org.
The site was a joint a project between the Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The name relates to the fact that every nine and a half minutes, someone contracts the HIV virus, according to the CDC.
"The campaign will confront complacency and put HIV/AIDS back on the nation's radar screen," Kevin Fenton, director of the CDC's HIV/AIDS prevention programs, told USA Today.
The new campaign follows news of an increased rate of HIV infection in the nation's capital, which has inspired many health officials to urge people who may be at risk for the disease to get an STD test.
People who detect that they have HIV early through a lab test can take advantage of various treatments for the condition that could prolong their life.
