More STD testing needed to stop spread of infection, experts say

Category: Sexually Transmitted Diseases

With rates of STD infection rising among teenagers, many public health departments across the country are stepping up efforts to encourage young people to get an STD test.

Connecticut's health department recently ran a campaign in which it offered free confidential testing to anyone 13 years old and older without parental consent.

State public health officials told TheDay.com that rates of infection are rising at an alarming rate among teens, and efforts like this are needed to head off a public health crisis.

"Getting tested for sexually transmitted diseases is important as many STDs do not have signs or symptoms," said Dr. J. Robert Galvin, public health commissioner. "Early diagnosis and treatment of an STD may prevent serious complications and spread of the disease, helping to keep both you and your partners healthy."

National public health agencies say that STD testing can be one of the most effective ways to stop the spread of infections.
