Many experts agree that STD testing can be one of the most effective ways to stop the spread of infections, however the results of a recent survey released by a University of Wisconsin researcher shows that many women are reluctant to seek tests.
The survey, conducted by Heather Royer, revealed that 99 percent of women said they would only seek an STD test if they are showing symptoms, even though many diseases can infect a body for long periods of time without presenting any symptoms. Additionally, 62 percent of women reported feeling anxious about getting tested.
Royer said that these stigmas and misconceptions are interfering with testing that could help prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, and that educational programs could help dispel some of the myths surrounding testing.
"Based on my clinical experience, and now by the results of this study, its clear many women have significant misconceptions about STDs and STD testing," she said. ''Those beliefs may influence continued disease transmission.''
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that one in four women between the ages of 18 and 24 have some form of STD.
