Illinois bill would allow expedited partner therapy after STD testing

Category: Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Doctors would be allowed to offer treatment to partnersIn response to news that STD rates are rising in Illinois, the legislature has passed a bill which would allow for expedited partner therapy (EPT) as a way to counteract the trend.

In EPT, when someone comes in for an STD test, a doctor is allowed to prescribe a dose of treatment for their partner as well, even without ever examining the partner personally.

The technique has been shown to be effective at reducing STD rates in numerous studies, since re-infection by a partner is a common problem and not all patients will respond to efforts to convince their partner to come in for an STD test themselves.

According to the CDC, EPT is permissible in 15 states, with a further 24 where it is not expressly forbidden.

STD testing is considered one of the best ways to prevent further spread of these diseases, with programs such as MTV's GYT campaign focusing on young people, who make up the vast majority of those afflicted. According to GYT, half of all young Americans will get an STD by the age of 25.
