Testosterone testing may help determine prostate risk

Category: Prostate

Due in part to recent controversy over the efficacy of PSA testing, little has been made of role testosterone testing can play in the detecting prostate cancer. While it may not provide as targeted of a measure of risk, health experts say that may but useful in building a picture of a patient's risk of cancer.

In fact, a recent study from University of Clinics in Brussels, Belgium found that early testosterone testing may predict future increases in the hormone, according to UroToday. High levels of testosterone have been associated with an increased risk of prostate cancer.

They said that testosterone testing may be particularly important for men on androgen deprivation therapy, which is a common treatment for reducing prostate risk. According to researchers, hormone levels may be used as an accurate predictor of when men should go on and off this therapy.

The findings could help doctors determine more effective treatments for men with various stages of prostate cancer. More than 200,000 men develop the potentially deadly disease each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
