Despite a recent controversy about the benefits of PSA tests, a growing number of doctors in the men's health community are saying the test is not only safe, but essential for detecting a potentially life threatening disease.
Critics say the test often leads to unnecessary medical procedures andbillions of dollars in extra spending. But many doctors are saying that, without the test, many men with prostate cancer would fall through the cracks.
“Every man has the right to know if he has cancer,” said Jonathan W. Simons, MD, president and CEO of the Prostate Cancer Foundation. “And right now, the PSA test and an informed discussion with their doctor are the best tools men have for an early diagnosis.”
Simon continued that in the near future there may be more focused testing methods, but the PSA test is the best available option.
More than 28,000 men died from prostate cancer in 2006, according to the most recent available statistics from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
