PSA testing is a vital part of men's health, experts say
Updated: 2010-08-27 21:44:06 CST Category: Prostate
When it is found early, prostate cancer can be extremely treatable and relatively easy to cure. However, when the problem goes undiscovered and is allowed to develop, it can have deadly consequences.
For this reason, many health experts recommend PSA testing. Prostate cancer can present few symptoms, and men could have a potentially harmful growth developing without ever being aware of it.
Man to Man, a prostate cancer support group is currently offering free PSA testing in the Decatur, Alabama area to help make the procedure more available to a wider spectrum of men, according to local NBC affiliate WAFF.
"I was diagnosed with prostate cancer, and at 42 years old at that time, I really had no symptoms," Bobby Smith, who is involved with the program, told the news source. "The blood screening the doctor did with me at that time is what identified some things he wasn't comfortable with. That's why the screening is so important.
There are currently more than 2 million men in the U.S. who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer. Many of these men are still alive because of early detection, according to the American Cancer Society.
