Health departments offer free PSA tests
Updated: 2010-07-20 19:29:35 CST Category: Prostate
In an effort to make PSA testing more available to low-income individuals who may not be able to afford the procedure on their own, public health departments across the country are offering free prostate cancer screening.
The Mobile County Health Department recently announced that it would begin offering PSA testing to men between the ages of 40 and 75 who have no health insurance.
Health Officer Bert Eichold told local CBS affiliate WKRG that prostate cancer can be highly treatable when it is caught in its early stages. However, the disease can be deadly when it goes untreated, spreading to other parts of the body.
"In fact, the 10-year survival rate for prostate cancer is 93 percent if it is detected and treated early," he told the news source.
Prostate cancer disproportionately affects men living in low income areas. Health departments in New York and New Jersey have recently initiated similar efforts to address the situation.
Prostate cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in the U.S. and kills nearly 30,000 men each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
