Free PSA testing helps more men get screened

Category: Prostate

Despite the fact that prostate cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related death among men, experts say that too few men are seeking PSA testing, which could detect a potentially deadly tumor in its early stages.

In an effort to get more men tested, public health groups across the country are launching efforts to help men access the procedure, which could potentially save their lives.

For example, the Hospital of Saint Raphael in Norwalk, Connecticut recently provided free PSA testing to high-risk groups. Hospital officials told Norwalk Plus that this type of event helps them catch problems early, which results in better treatment results later.

"We are working hard to make sure the word is getting out that men in high-risk groups - like African-Americans and those with a family history of cancer - need to take prostate cancer seriously," Augustine Okeke, a program coordinator with the hospital, told the news source.

Modern testing and treatment options have significantly improved the survival rate of prostate cancer, according to the American Cancer Society.
