Liver problem are common, even among non-drinkers

Category: Liver Diseases

Many people may think that they have no reason to consider a liver panel test because they do not drink to excess. Liver disease is a condition that is closely associated with alcoholism. However, experts say that a person does not need to drink heavily to be at risk for developing liver problems.

Dr. Martin Scurr recently wrote in the Daily Mail that non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is actually the most common form of liver disease. It is caused by fatty buildups in the liver that result in scarring that decreases the function of the organ.

Anyone can develop the condition, and Dr. Scurr wrote that is most common among obese individuals who have high cholesterol or insulin resistance.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver is generally not thought of as a very serious condition. With treatment and lifestyle changes, a person can avoid any serious damage. However, the Mayo Clinic reports that when the condition is ignored, it can lead to cirrhosis and total loss of liver function.

This is why it is important for individuals who are overweight or have high cholesterol or insulin resistance to consider liver panel testing. This may help them determine if lifestyle changes are necessary to avoid potentially serious liver complications.ADNFCR-2248-ID-800734866-ADNFCR
