New medications may benefit kidney disease patients

Category: Kidney Diseases

In recent years, scientists have developed a range of new medications that can effectively prevent kidney disease from progressing to full-blown failure. The availability of these therapies make kidney testing all the more important. Doctors can't start their patients on the treatments until they know there is as problem.

One new treatment which may soon become available is a medication that could prevent protein from entering the urine. This condition is one of the hallmarks of kidney disease and may contribute to significant damage.

A team of scientists from the Medical College of Georgia recently developed a drug that prevents this condition from happening. In kidney disease, the organs become more permeable. This allows excess protein to pass through, which further worsens the condition. However, the new medication has been shown in lab animals to improve kidney health.

"We have known for a long time that renal failure comes with protein in your urine, especially in diabetes," said David Pollock, who led the study. "A lot of people thought they just lower blood pressure and anything that lowers blood pressure is going to make your kidneys feel better."
