Hepatitis C linked to kidney cancer

Category: Kidney Diseases

Individuals who have contracted hepatitis C may want to seek a kidney test, as a new study has found a link between the virus and kidney cancer.

Using data on 67,000 patients collected the Henry Ford Health System, investigators found that hepatitis C patients were twice as likely to develop kidney cancer compared to the rest of the population.

The virus is mainly known to cause liver damage, but lead researcher Stuart Gordon said that the findings show how destructive it can be to overall health.

"These results add to growing literature that shows that the hepatitis C virus causes disease that extends beyond the liver, and in fact most of our HCV-infected kidney cancer patients had only minimal liver damage," he said.

Stuart added that more doctors should be aware of the link between hepatitis C and kidney cancer, and should consider increased screening.

Kidney cancer is one of the few types of cancer that is seeing a surge in cases, according to the American Cancer Society.
