Researchers say BPA exposure leads to fertility problems

Category: Infertitlity Hormone Testing

High levels of exposure to the chemical bisphenol A, or BPA, may result in unhealthy FSH test results for women. A new study has shown that the chemical may cause fertility problems.

Researchers from the University of Cincinnati studied the effects of exposing mice to varying levels of BPA. The results showed that females exposed to the highest levels were significantly more likely to develop a condition known as pyometra, which is marked by hormonal and structural changes in the uterus. These problems lead to infertility and can even be life-threatening when untreated.

The team noted that this condition is usually seen in females that have been exposed to high levels of estrogen over long periods of time. However, BPA is known to disrupt hormone levels, which means that it could have similar effects.

While the findings are not immediately applicable to humans, as the study was conducted in mice, the researchers said the results provide further evidence that BPA can be harmful to health. This should prompt further investigations to develop an understanding of the chemical's effects in humans.
