Delaying parenthood may have many consequences, report states

Category: Infertitlity Hormone Testing

Both men and women who are considering delaying parenthood may benefit from FSH testing to make sure they are still fertile, as a new report suggests that fertility may be just one of several issues that may arise from trying to conceive at an older age.

The Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada recently published a report stating that fertility begins rapidly declining in both men and women around their mid 30s. While this fact may be well-recognized, there are a number of other potential complications associated with delaying parenthood.

For example, the report points out that older women are more likely to have shorter pregnancies. Preterm birth has been linked to a number potentially serious complications for both the mother and the baby. Furthermore, older women are more likely to experience disability after giving birth.

The authors of the report said these risks should cause women to consider the implications of delaying parenthood.

"While most women have some awareness of the 'biological clock' and realize that conception difficulties increase with age, many are unaware of the limitations of fertility treatments and of the impact of maternal age on pregnancy outcome," said Dr. Jo-Ann Johnson, who wrote the report.

The recommendations of the organization underscore the importance of seeking FSH testing for those who are considering delaying pregnancy.
