It is relatively common for men to receive FSH test results indicating they have impaired fertility. This doesn't necessarily have to be a permanent setback though, as new evidence suggests that coenzyme Q10 supplementation may help men improve their fertility levels.
A team of researchers administered supplements to a group of nearly 300 men twice daily for up to 12 months. The results, which were published in the journal International Urology and Nephrology, indicated that the majority of men made significant improvements in sperm concentration, motility and morphology, three of the most important measures of fertility.
Additionally, participants and their partners were more likely to successfully conceive a child at the end of the 12-month period of supplementation than at the beginning of the study. The researchers said this provides strong evidence that coenzyme Q10 supplementation supports male fertility.
While couples' fertility problems are often blamed on the woman, experts say that men's health issues account for at least one-third of issues, which is at least half of all fertility problems that actually get diagnosed. If men agree to FSH testing and are diagnosed with an impairment, it may allow them to start effective treatments, such as nutritional supplementation.
