More men than ever may have low testosterone

Category: Hormones and Metabolism

There are many potential therapies for low hormone levels in men, but without testosterone testing, individuals may never know if they have unhealthy levels of the compound, which is connected to a broad array of health issues.

A study recently published in the journal The Aging Male called for the international medical community to bring more attention to the issue of testosterone deficiency in older men.

The researchers said that this is drastically needed, as an aging population, high rates of chronic diseases and other environmental factors are causing more individuals than ever before to experience low hormone levels.

“International action is urgently needed to raise awareness in the medical profession in the various countries of these remarkably low levels of testosterone treatment,” the team wrote in their report. “Improvement in this requires education and motivation of doctors and those regulating the healthcare systems.”

Estimates of the prevalence of testosterone deficiency have ranged as high as 20 percent. Some have suggested that these figures are going to rise. Given these facts, men may benefit from testosterone testing and treatment when appropriate.
