Study: olive oil good for heart
Updated: 2010-04-27 16:03:33 CST Category: Heart Health and Cholesterol
Foods cooked in olive oil are not only tasty, but new research is suggesting the so-called "Mediterranean diet" may also have heart health benefits and reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.
The researchers gave a group of patients with a metabolic syndrome, which can lead to heart disease and diabetes, a diet rich in phenol compounds, which are believed to be the beneficial component in olive oil.
The study found that the genes which are known to lead to heart disease and diabetes were repressed in the patients who ate the phenol-rich diet.
Researcher Francisco Perez-Jimenez said in the study that the results help support the notion that diets incorporating olive oil can have benefits for heart health.
"These findings strengthen the relationship between inflammation, obesity and diet and provide evidence at the most basic level of healthy effects derived from virgin olive oil consumption," he said.
The Food and Drug Administration says that consuming about two tablespoons of olive oil each day may reduce the risk of heart disease.
