For individuals who have received unhealthy cholesterol tests, the holidays can be a serious challenge. Many Thanksgiving favorites come packed with cholesterol and sodium and may jeopardize a person's cardiovascular health if they already have risk factors for heart disease.
Because of these dangers, health experts are urging individuals to watch what they eat this holiday season. Just because a person is going to a number of parties where there will be heaping helpings of fattening foods does not mean they need to eat it all.
Donna Mehrle, a registered dietitian at the University of Missouri, said that people should continue to eat a sensible diet during the holidays and try to find more time to get exercise.
"People can continue their healthy habits by being aware of their food choices at the Thanksgiving table and identifying time commitments that may interrupt their regular exercise schedules," she said.
She added that people should try to organize a football game or take a walk after a Thanksgiving dinner rather than sit around the TV or go back for seconds.
These strategies may help individuals who have received unhealthy cholesterol test results avoid cardiovascular complications during the holidays.
