FDA clears new generic statin

Category: Heart Health and Cholesterol

Individuals who have received unhealthy cholesterol tests will soon have a new option for treating their cardiovascular condition, as the FDA recently approved a new generic version of a popular cholesterol-lowering statin medication.

Lipitor, which is the top selling medication ever, recently lost its patent. This opened the door to new, more affordable alternatives to the drug. Ranbaxy Pharmaceuticals was the first company to win FDA approval of a new generic version of the statin medication.

Officials from the company said that this could be very good news for anyone who struggles with high cholesterol, one of the most common and dangerous medical conditions in the U.S. Patients may now be able to access the much-needed medication much more affordably.

"Atorvastatin helps millions of Americans manage healthy cholesterol levels, and we are pleased to have received U.S. FDA approval to manufacture and market a safe, effective, affordable and accessible alternative to branded Lipitor," said Ranbaxy CEO Arun Sawhney.

In order to keep the drug relevant, Pfizer, the manufacturer of Lipitor, is considering plans for an over-the-counter version of the popular statin.
