Women urged to get regular cholesterol tests

Category: Heart Health and Cholesterol

Young women under the age of 35 should consider getting regular medical checkups, which includes cholesterol tests.

That's according to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, through an advice column that appeared on Courant.com recently.

Getting a lab test regularly is a way to prevent future medical problems as well as establish healthy behaviors, according to the clinic. Past studies have shown that women who have a healthy routine down by the age of 50 can reduce their mortality rate by 40 percent.

A person's cholesterol level is determined through a blood test and is particularly suggested for men and women with a family history of high cholesterol and heart disease. Those who get normal results back from their blood test are suggested to get rechecked every five years.

These tests are also suggested for those who may have a poor diet or who are regular smokers. Getting a cholesterol test and catching a condition in its early stages will allow one's doctor to recommend proper treatment.

People who have gotten tests stating they have high cholesterol have lowered their levels through medication, diet and regular exercise.
