Study finds link between ED and heart disease

Category: Heart Health and Cholesterol

Men with erectile dysfunction (ED) may want to consider seeking a cholesterol test to help determine their risk for heart disease, as a new study has found that men with the condition are more likely to experience heart events.

The research, which was conducted by the Center for Male Reproductive Health at Reproductive Health Associates in New York, found that those who suffer from ED have an elevated risk for developing coronary artery calcification, which can lead to heart disease.

Natan Bar-Chama, who led the investigation, said that men with ED should consider as many heart tests as are available to them, as the study adds to a growing body of evidence suggesting the condition is related to heart disease.

"This study highlights that ED is the canary in the coal mine for underlying cardiovascular disease," he said. "Therefore, men with ED need to be evaluated for overall cardiovascular risk and guidelines are needed to define which diagnostic tests can best assess this risk."

He added that catching cardiovascular problems early in men may lead to better health outcomes.
