Beef can play role in cholesterol-lowering diet

Category: Heart Health and Cholesterol

Many people who have received unhealthy cholesterol test results believe that they should do all they can to stay away from red meat. But new research suggests that this may not actually be necessary.

A team of researchers from Penn State University found that lean beef can play a role in a cholesterol-lowering diet, even when eaten on a daily basis. This may allow individuals to improve their heart health without restricting their diet unnecessarily.

For the study, the researchers assessed the effects of diet on a group of adults with slightly unhealthy cholesterol. The results showed that individuals who consumed between four and 5.4 ounces of lean beef every day were able to reduce their cholesterol by up to 10 percent.

Of course, moderation is still key in these findings. Consuming any more beef on a daily basis could drive cholesterol levels back up, and preparing the meat with high-sodium sauces and marinades could increase blood pressure levels.

Still, the finding that beef could play a role in a cholesterol-lowering diet could have important implications, as it generally a good source of B vitamins and protein.
