Changes in fitness and weight linked to worsening cholesterol

Category: Heart Health and Cholesterol

Changes in fitness and weight linked to worsening cholesterol Maintaining physical fitness and avoiding excessive weight gain may be among the best ways to support heart health and avoid receiving unhealthy cholesterol test results, according to a new study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

The findings may sound intuitive, but the University of South Carolina researchers who conducted the study said that few investigations have looked at the direct impact of both of these factors on things like cholesterol and blood pressure levels.

To measure the full impact of fitness and weight gain on heart health, the researchers administered physical examinations to more than 3,000 adults over a six-year period. During this time, the researchers tracked changes in participants' fitness and weight.

The results showed that as exercise capacity worsened and individuals put on more weight, their cholesterol and blood pressure rose. Fitness and weight were independently associated with poor heart health, but together they caused a progressive decline in cardiovascular condition.

The researchers said that taking steps to maintain fitness and avoid excessive weight gain may be the keys to preserving heart health with age.ADNFCR-2248-ID-800703780-ADNFCR
