Before mainstream Hollywood produced stories about homosexual men, there was Pedro Zamora, a cast member on the third season of MTV's The Real World.
Zamora was an openly gay man who was HIV-positive and married Sean Sasser, which was documented on the show. A day after the season finale of the show aired, Zamora died.
A new film titled Pedro will air tomorrow night at 8 p.m. EST on MTV and depicts Zamora's life before and during the popular reality show.
The film was written by Dustin Lance Black, who recently won an Academy Award for his screenplay for Milk, and follows a 17-year-old Zamora, which is when he found out he was HIV-positive, to his death at the age of 22.
It will also reveal Zamora's activist work and how he made it a point to speak at schools to tell children that people with AIDS were just like them "so you don't have to be afraid."
The film follows news of an increase in the amount of people living with the disease in Washington DC, which has had many health officials in the country urging more people to get a blood test for HIV or to get an anonymous STD test.
