Report shows importance of lead blood test

Category: General Wellness

Parents may have a new reason to worry about their children being exposed to lead poisoning, according to a recent report.

The Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a report that is supposedly the first known case of lead exposure through car seats, the New York Times reports. While lead has been found in cars in the past, this is the first time it's been pinpointed to this particular item.

Last year six babies and toddlers from Maine were reported having high levels of lead in their blood, forcing public health officials to investigate the home and family car.

Tina Bernier, an environmental specialist for Maine's Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program, told the news provider that 40 micrograms per square foot was an "elevated level" for floors. The readings in the car were much higher.

"Some of the numbers in the car seats were in the 400 range, and it went up to 1,000 in other areas of the cars," Bernier said.

This case highlights the importance of parents practicing due diligence when protecting their children from lead poisoning. If parents suspect their child may be poisoned, a lead blood test can help determine if that is the case.
