Study: Slight reduction of carbs can help with weight loss

Category: General Health

People who are interested in losing some extra pounds may simply need to adjust some of the food they eat, particularly if they eat a lot of foods with carbohydrates.

A new study from the University of Alabama at Birmingham has found that people who make a slight reduction in the amount of carbohydrates they eat can experience weight loss.

Researchers explained that the study consisted of the examination of two groups: one who ate a breakfast with the standard amount of calories from carbohydrates and another whose meal had a moderate reduction in calories from carbs.

"[The moderate group] reported that they felt fuller for a longer period of time following the meal than did those with a diet more in line with what most Americans consume," said Dr Barbara Gower, professor in the Department of Nutrition Sciences.

Gower added that this finding could potentially aid in weight loss since people would be less likely to overeat if they didn't experience the feeling of hunger.

According to the U.S. Departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services, the recommended range of calories from carbohydrates is between 45 to 65 percent. The group with the moderate reduction ate meals containing 43 percent calories from carbs.
