New approach to ovarian cancer treatment may save lives

Category: Cancer Detection and Tumor Markers

An adjustment made to the conventional administration of ovarian cancer chemotherapy may yield a higher survival rate in patients, research suggests.

A study published in oncology journal The Lancet claimed that dose-dense weekly treatment with the drug paclitaxel increased latency periods of recovery and overall survival of ovarian cancer patients, compared to the standard chemotherapy treatment administered every three weeks, HealthDay News reports.

Researchers at the National Cancer Center Hospital in Tokyo found that of 637 women studied, women given the dose-dense treatment had a 29 percent lower risk of cancer progression and a 25 percent lower risk of death.

However, the research team noted that many of the patients in the dose-dense group ceased treatment because of toxicity issues. Others in the group reported sever amnesia.

Dr Michael A. Bookman, in a commentary on the study, wrote, "The use of such dose-dense therapy should be decided on an individual basis together with other options for women with advanced- stage ovarian cancer."

The NCI reports that ovarian cancer testing can help find cancer at an early stage and increase the likelihood that it can be successfully treated.
