Sexually Transmitted Diseases
STDs are often asymptomatic
Updated: 2012-01-24 16:44:18 CST Category: Sexually Transmitted Diseases
Following the release of national health data, it has become clear that the number of individuals receiving positive STD tests is rising in some states. Some experts blame the situation on risky sexual behavior, while others say it is a result of lack of knowledge concerning sexual health.
Regardless of the cause, it is critical for anyone who has had unprotected sex or who believes they may be infected to seek STD testing. This is because most common infections present few symptoms. Diseases like chlamydia and syphilis may progress for months before rearing their head and causing definitive health problems, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Even though these diseases develop without causing clear symptoms, it does not mean they are harmless. Many can lead to infertility, as well as other complications in a person's reproductive system. Furthermore, individuals who have one STD are much more likely to become infected with HIV.
For those who have practiced unsafe sex, seeking an STD test is the only way to be sure of their health status. This may play a key role in their ability to successfully treat their infection, as well help prevent the disease from continuing to spread.
