Overactive thyroid linked to increased stroke risk
Updated: 2010-04-05 20:17:36 CST Category: Thyroid Diseases
Results of a recent study suggest that young adults who have an overactive thyroid are at a significantly increased risk of suffering a stroke than those without the condition.
An overactive thyroid, which is a common endocrine disorder known as hyperthyroidism, affects nearly 1 percent of the world's population, causing symptoms such as weight loss, diarrhea and an abnormal metabolism.
In the study, a research team from the School of Health Care Administration at Taipei Medical University analyzed the data of 3,176 young adults recently diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and compared their medical information to more than 25,000 healthy participants.
Lead author Herng-Ching Lin and his colleagues tracked the study group for five years and noted how many patients suffered an ischemic stroke. After adjusting for risk factors such as gender, income, patient age, high blood pressure and heart disease, the researchers found that the risk of having a stroke during that period was 44 percent higher for patients with hyperthyroidism compared to those without the condition.
"A more thorough evaluation in future studies may help elucidate the causes of stroke in this age group," said Lin. "Our results indicate a need for thyroid function testing and detection of hyperthyroidism in surveys to identify the causes of ischemic stroke in young people."
